Article Alert: Nabbing Ned....

I got this one off of Google alerts..

"Nabbing Ned: It Seems Everyone Had a Cunning Plan"

by Tim Barlass

Sydney Morning Herald. (Oct. 24, 2010)

There are some very imaginative ideas put forth out there for the capture of the Kellys in this article. Seems that nearly everyone was after a piece of the reward pie! For some of the suggestions we can agree with Capt. Standish who said (regarding the balloon reconnaissance idea)  that ''This proposition is simply absurd.''

I had read about the balloon recon bit a while back in Graham Jones's "The Kelly Years." He has several other interesting public suggestions  for the gang's capture in the book, too. Worth a look!

  1. How is this for an outlandish plan?

Let's let the Kellys know that one of their oldest friends is getting a bit thick with us, and really annoy them so much that they kill him.

Then, the police guards hide under the bed in his hut for almost a day so that the alarm is delayed longer than anyone would have expected.

By the time we go looking for them, they are all suffering from lack of sleep (and at least one of them, Hart, seems badly hung over for a while) and holed up somewhere incredibly easy to get to by train.

Meanwhile, they have all accoutred (good word, that) themselves in amateurly made armour that restricts their mobility both on foot and on horse, and marksmanship. Oh, and they have forgotten that a few of us, reputedly, would shoot our grandmothers between the eyes for just a sniff of reward money, so shooting someone we don't like much - make that not at all - in the legs for a share of eight thousand quid is no problem.

    Nah, that would never work.
